Flying the Flag for Kate and Will

Cavendish Engineers provided both engineering consultancy and project management services on this project. The flag pole was part of a Grade II Heritage Building, based in Westminster and originally built in the early 1900’s. In 1928 in was the flag was the highest point in London.

Now over 100 years old, and made of oak it became a unstable and structurally unsound. The original pole was installed with the structure of the building built around the pole. This meant that 1/3 of the pole was embedded into the building. The main challenge with this project was trying to ascertain how far down the pole was embedded and how it could be removed. After several engineering calculations and recommendations, it was decided to remove the flag pole via a 20ft crane.

As the building is situated opposite Westminster gardens, permission had to be granted from Westminster council to close the road to accommodate the crane.

The flag pole was successfully replaced and was in place for the Royal Wedding this year.
