Column Facade Project

Cavendish Engineers has experience in providing integrated engineering services to the public sector. Cavendish was asked to re-evaluate engineering options on a column façade project. The building is Grade II listed and the columns were originally built in the early 1900’s along with the construction of the building. In the 1900’s columns were traditionally made with a steel structure, wrapped in stone. The columns however were becoming unstable and needed either replacing or restoring. Both of these options required new stone and therefore became quite costly. After examining the columns Cavendish Engineers came up with a solution that was 1/5 of the replacement project cost and still was in keeping with English heritage guidelines. An X ray machine was used to establish the structure within. This was then wrapped with carbon fibre and covered with a stone effect resin.
